Costco Hot Tub Review
Why mass merchants keep failing at hot tubs - and Costco is no exception.
For years now mass merchants have been trying, unsuccessfully, to break into the Hot Tub market with promises of great prices on good quality Hot Tubs and Swim Spas. The reality is they have failed miserably to provide quality products at a competitive price, instead selling low end spas at prices that any budget online direct seller can meet or beat.
So why is it that these retail giants fail again and again with this product? Why are Costco Hot Tubs such a problem? Why do they never get it right? And why, when they do finally get a good quality product like the Canadian Costco Hot Tub from Beachcomber, is their price so high?
In our 2021 Costco Hot Tub review, we look at the multitude of reasons why you really want to do your homework before purchasing a Costco Hot Tub, and why tbe internet is awash with complaints, stories of abysmal service and nightmare stories about Costco Hot Tubs.
The reality is that the mass merchants like Costco suck at complex products such as Hot Tubs for a myriad of reasons, including; lack of knowledge, lack of available information to consumers, lack of volume of sales, and their insistence at being the cheapest without understanding what makes a good Hot Tub… leaving them in the unenviable position of selling utter rubbish at prices that any local dealer could meet or beat if they were willing to sell such a low level of quality.

So lets look in depth at the reasons they keep failing their customers on this product and then lets have a look at some actual models and see how they stack up against quality Hot Tubs.
- The first reason they tend to fail at these products is because they simply do not do the volume of sales to get good pricing from suppliers. That’s right, Costco doesn’t really sell that many Hot Tubs; in fact, there are individual dealers that sell more Hot Tubs in a year than the entire Costco Hot Tub sales across the country!
- The second reason Costco Hot Tubs review badly is they try to sell too cheaply to get the best price for their members. The problem here is that it’s impossible to supply them with a good quality product because of the pricing they try and sell at, so they can beat the cheap internet Hot Tubs but they just don’t seem to grasp that these Hot Tubs are fundamentally different than the quality Hot Tubs. In order to supply Costco Hot Tubs, you have to cut so many corners on the build quality to get the price point right that you can’t possibily build a reliable spa. The shells are thin, the fabrication is low end, the insulation is inexpensive (low R-value), and the parts are a mix of good and bad. The only exception I have ever seen is the Canadian Costco stores selling a Beachcomber Hot Tub, and in this case it’s not a bad Hot Tub but it’s also not a good price! You can easily buy the same or better quality Hot Tub with more features for less money!
- The third reason why Costco Hot Tubs are a mess, is they have a history of bankrupting Hot Tub suppliers because of the massive return rate. Many manufacturers just won’t supply Costco, in fact in the US there has never been a good quality reliable manufacturer supplying Costco Hot Tubs, so this leaves them dealing with the low end of the industry and that’s never a good place to start from.
- Next up is the total lack of available information, product support and assistance. These speciality products need timely information so that minor issues don’t blow up into big issues, but that kind of support costs money and the companies supplying Costco Hot Tubs can’t afford to offer that support because, again, the pricing is so out of whack with where it needs to be to even supply a good product, never mind offering reliable backup and support. It’s doomed to fail before it even gets out the door!
- My last reason that these Costco Hot Tubs review so low is because they use gimmicky tricks to make you think the Hot Tub is high end. Tricks like using lots of jets and pumps because customers always think more is better. But in the Hot Tub industry the little jets are cheap; like $10, and do little or nothing for real muscle massage, so they will put 70 of them in a Hot Tub and the consumer goes ‘WOW!’ That’s way more jets than the expensive Hot Tub I was looking at, but the expensive Tub has 40 more of the $50 high end therapy massage jets, so the $700 jet package on the Costco Hot Tub might look great on paper but the $2000 jet package on a high end therapy massage spa is going to be a much better performing Hot Tub.
Hot Tub University uses a single proprietary algorithm that takes into account a myriad of things… from the weight and thickness of the shell, to various manufacturing techniques, to the quality of parts and it’s unbiased in so much as it just crunches the numbers and gives a rating that takes into account known failure rates on various parts. Like leaks based on how the jet attaches to the shell or how the plumbing attaches to the jets, right down to the type and amount of resin used on the shell. When we run Costco Hot Tubs through our evaluator, they come out exactly where we expect them to! And for that price of spa? Right near the bottom!
