Artesian Brand Review
Once one of our top-tier brands - until one decision knocked them off the list.
The artesian line of hot tubs was, for a very long time, one of our top tier brands. They are one of the few companies that used to do everything right when building hot tub’s and they still do almost everything right. They make a moderately strong self-supporting shell using hand rolled fibreglass over acrylic, they use quality OEM components, a good insulation package and have a good dealer network.
Artesian knows how to make good hot tubs and they’ve known how to do this for many years. That makes their decision a few years ago all the more frustrating because the good brands of hot tubs are few and far between. Last year artesian decided to stop clamping their plumbing lines and instead go with the system called shur-grip. While this system is better than standard plumbing with no clamps at all, it is not nearly as effective at preventing leaks than hot tub plumbing which is properly glued and clamped.
The shell of the artesian line is made with hand-rolled fibreglass and it is a nice thick, strong shell that will last many many years without any issues. In our hot tub evaluator, the shell scores a 7.2 and we always look for a number over seven in a quality hot tub.
Components
Artesian hot tub’s use the Balboa spa control system which is the best spa control system on the market today. They use high-quality waterways pumps and jets which are also of very high-quality. The other benefit of good OEM parts is that they are readily available through many sources which means that when a component fails, as it inevitably will, replacement components will be easily sourced and reasonably priced. In particular, the Balboa control system is the system with the least expensive heater core which can save you hundreds of dollars down the road when you need to replace the heater and the hot tub is no longer under warranty.
Construction
Artesian hot tubs also have adequately powered pumps for the number and the size of jets in the tub which means that the pumps will not work excessively or generate excess heat. This means your pumps will last longer and your hot tub will cost you less money down the road. We’d like to see them slightly heavier though because they are just adequate for the standard models but that’s nit-picking. The shell of the artesian line is made with hand-rolled fibreglass and it is a nice thick, strong shell that will last many many years without any issues. In our hot tub evaluator, the shell scores a 7.2 and we always look for a number over seven in a quality hot tub. The only thing stopping the Artesian hot tubs from the highest score in this area is the lack of clamped plumbing lines which takes it down a couple notches.
Efficiency
Artesian hot tubs use a full form insulation package which is, without question, the most effective way to insulate a hot tub. It not only provides excellent R-value for insulation, it also provides support for the plumbing lines which means that the plumbing is isolated from the vibrations of the motors. This can reduce plumbing leaks by stabilizing the plumbing system.
Overall
So the bottom line with Artesian hot tubs is very simple. It is a good quality hot tub that has many positive attributes but one negative one. All in all it is a very good option and the lack of clamping on the plumbing, while it is a negative, it doesn’t change the fact that this is otherwise a very strong unit.
Artesian hot tubs are are still very good hot tubs and great value for the money. They have fallen out of our top-tier because of the lack of clamps on all plumbing joints but they still have a good strong shell, good component list, and good insulation so it is still a quality hot tub. One negative doesn’t completely kill all the positives in the line.
